Navigating the labyrinthine corridors of the Tomb of the Unknown King in Final Fantasy VIII can be a daunting experience for both newcomers and veteran players. Located on a peninsula northeast of Deling City, this optional dungeon holds valuable rewards, including a brand-new Guardian Force. Understanding the specific layout and mechanical triggers of the maze is essential to successfully completing the quest without getting permanently lost.
Finding the Lost Student ID
Your initial objective in this ancient burial ground is given by the Galbadian guard back at Caraway Mansion. Upon entering the tomb, you simply need to move forward a few screens to locate a discarded sword on the ground. Interacting with the weapon reveals the student ID number, which you can write down to complete the mandatory portion of the mission.
While you can leave immediately after securing the number, exploring deeper allows you to unlock powerful secrets. The real challenge begins when you try to navigate the identical-looking intersections of the tomb. Turning back to the exit or venturing forward requires careful tracking of your compass coordinates.
Solving the Water Flood Puzzles
To reach the hidden masters of the labyrinth, you must explore the outer chambers located at the cardinal points of the maze. Navigating to the eastern room reveals a large stone statue anchored to a dam mechanism. Pulling the chain next to the statue allows water to flood the surrounding channels, altering the structure of the inner tomb.
Next, you must navigate to the western chamber where a gear system awaits your intervention. Removing the wedge from the gears activates the remaining waterworks across the map. These actions are mandatory for lowering the drawbridge that leads directly to the central chamber.
Defeating the Secret Guardian Forces
Once the water puzzles are solved, you can navigate directly to the center of the tomb to face the legendary entities guarding the sarcophagus. You will first encounter Sacred, a powerful minotaur who possesses high physical defense and regenerative earth abilities. Utilizing Wind-based magic like Aero will easily bypass his defenses and force him to retreat further into the tomb.
The final confrontation requires you to battle both Sacred and his older brother, Minotaur, simultaneously. Focus your magical attacks on one brother at a time while maintaining your party's health with Float magic to negate their earth-shattering team attacks. Defeating the duo prompts them to surrender and join your inventory as the dual Guardian Force known as The Brothers.
